March Manicure Madness, Day Nineteen: African Queen

This is my first time to try out sticky nail art guides! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

I received Essence African Queen nail art guides as a birthday present, last August – yup, I’ve been procrastinating since then. Basically, they’re stickers with cut-out bits. You stick them to your nail (on top of your already dry manicure) and paint over them in a contrasting colour. Peel them off when the polish has had a few minutes to set, and ta-dah! Easy, tiger-print nails. No mess, no fuss. These definitely did what they said on the tin.

It’s quite lovely, isn’t it? I was mightily impressed. I used Essence Colour & Go 92 Better Late Than Never as the base colour, and Essence Multi Dimension 20 Fatal to paint on top of the guides. I would say that for the top colour, you’re best using a polish that is opaque in one coat. You can’t do two coats of polish over the guides, otherwise they will stick to the nail, and sure you can’t be doing that.

As an adieu, here’s a picture of my rabbit, Aurelia, chilling on my lap of a Friday afternoon. Have a great weekend, readers!

March Manicure Madness, Day Eighteen: Essence Better Late Than Never

Another day, another crappily-titled polish from Essence! This is one of their new shades – at least, according to the little “new” sticker on the cap. This is Essence Colour & Go 92 Better Late Than Never.

20120322-210604.jpg

One coat is enough to provide a gorgeous pop of colour. I did two, as you’ll see in the rest of the pictures, but this polish is a true-life one-coater.

20120322-210737.jpg

Application was good, Essence have streamlined their brush to make it flatter and wider. The edge was a little bit uneven, though, so I had to be careful.

20120322-210917.jpg

The colour is gorgeous, not a bright, garish red but a soft, pretty red with pink overtones. I think Strawberry Sorbet would be a more appropriate name, right?

Super pretty, and a gorgeous, easy-on-the-eye red suitable for summer and cocktails and all things garden picnic-y 🙂

March Manicure Madness, Day Seventeen: Somebody Please Tell Me Who The Eff I Is (Nicki Minaj)

All hail the most beauteous member of the OPI Nicki Minaj family of polishes – NL N17 Save Me.

20120321-142431.jpg

This polish is absolutely stunning, it’s no wonder it’s selling out in Europe and the US. It’s a clear suspension base packed with silver microglitter, bright turquoise blue glitter bars, and holographic glitter bars. The holographic bars are mostly hidden by the silver glitter, but flash rainbow colours as you move your hands. Oh, I’m in love!

20120321-142740.jpg

I wasn’t aiming for opacity so I just did two coats, over one coat of base. It could be layered over silver, or maybe black, but I think it’s gorgeous on its own.

20120321-142943.jpg

It dries quickly and feels quite gritty to the touch. Apparently removal is easier than it looks, however, and I think I can see why – the silver glitter pieces are tiny, the base is relatively thick, and the glitter bars are quite fine. One thing about the bars is that they need a little bit of tidying after you paint your nail, otherwise they tend to stick up or hang over the edge of the nail. Details, details!

It’s beeyooodeefull! Top marks OPI, and Nicki Minaj.

March Manicure Madness, Day Sixteen: Buff and Bronzed

Happy Tuesday! Today I’m wearing my first Models Own polish, Bronze Rage.

20120320-162812.jpg

My skin has pink-y blue-y undertones, so coppers and metals do little to complement my hands. The colour fell a little bit flat, sadly. I applied one coat for the next picture.

20120320-162944.jpg

And in this one, I’m wearing two coats. There isn’t a huge difference in colour saturation so, if you need a quick manicure, one coat of this and Bob’s your uncle.

20120320-170322.jpg

The formula was quite thick and heavy. The first coat was horribly streaky but the second evened it out well.

I wish I could wear metallics! This is a lovely one, but does not flatter me in the slightest.

March Manicure Madness, Day Fifteen: Chocolate Milk

The title of today’s post comes not from the name of the polish (which has a far less evocative moniker) but what its colour reminds me of – those Nesquik chocolate drinks that came in big yellow tubs. You would add several heaped spoons of it to a glass of cold milk and, hey presto, chocolatey goodness. There was a strawberry flavour, too, but I always preferred the chocolate version.

On to the polish, now, which is Essence Colour & Go 49 The Only Chance! Exclamation mark theirs, not mine. As if to convey a sense of urgency to the customer, “Hey, better buy me quick, before I sell out! Cos then you’ll be sorry!”. Um, no. Essence polishes always end up in the bargain bin, no offence to Essence – in fact I probably picked up this one at half price. If I had to name this polish, it would be called Chocolate Dreamboat.

like this… Kinda (via epicweird.com)

Here’s what 2 coats look like…

20120319-130653.jpg

The formula was quite thick but workable, and pretty heavily pigmented. The finish was a little dull, so a top coat wouldn’t hurt this manicure.

I like this colour for office-type-situations, but for me it’s a bit boring for everyday use.

March Manicure Madness, Day Fourteen: Emerald Isle

Continuing on the green Paddy’s Day theme, today I’m wearing the delightful 17 Lasting Fix Nail Polish in Exquisite. It’s a dark green jelly-like base with microshimmer particles of bright, forest green. It looks gorgeous on the nail, but it’s very thin and sheer on application, and requires at least 3 coats to build up decent coverage. It has a stunning, shimmering OPI-like finish that definitely doesn’t require a top coat. Picture-time!

Unfortunately, the crappy iPhone camera does not do this elegant polish justice. It’s a keeper!

March Manicure Madness, Day Thirteen: St. Patrick’s Day

First things first: Paddy, not Patty. Got that? Yes? Okay now we can move on.

So, technically, this should be Day Seventeen rather than Day Thirteen, it being 17th March and everything, but I’m a few days behind so JEEZ GIVE ME A BREAK ALREADY.

I am composed. Ahem.

Onwards to the Paddy’s Day manicure! I went for a green gradient manicure, topped with multicolour glitter. I started with one thick coat of Essence Colour & Go 18 Check Me Out.

20120317-235631.jpg

Then I painted the bottom 2/3rds with Rimmel Play Fast 800 Camouflage, using a slightly dried brush to stipple the edges.

20120317-235754.jpg

Finally, I did the tips with Essence Multi Dimension 64 Trendsetter which, actually, was a little bit dark to make a smooth gradient. Meh, too late!

20120317-235945.jpg

Barely waiting for it to dry, I added one coat of OPI Rainbow Connection…

20120318-000055.jpg

… Followed swiftly by a second coat, to cover up the colour differences.

20120318-000140.jpg

Yay more pictures!

I’d also like to add a photo from an awesome friend of mine, who does not have a beauty blog but SHOULD (hint hint) because she’s always posting fabulous manicures on Facebook. Here’s her patriotic St. Patrick’s Day nail art…

Gorgeous, no? Plenty more tomorrow!
